Can you be “bad” at trivia?

Yes… and no.

If you have test taking anxiety, then yes, you may struggle to answer questions quickly and effectively. But no one is “bad” at trivia in the context of knowing information. You don't have to identify as "smart" to correctly answer questions. The key is knowing a little about a lot!

Here are a few tips to become a Virtually Good Trivia winner

  1. Pay attention to current events

Even if a question isn’t asked about something that happened this year, they may ask an important historical question from years before.

  2. Take time to think about media after you consume it (books, TV shows, movies, music, etc.)

    • What was most interesting to you?

    • Was there a unique fact in that weird documentary series you just finished?

    • What did a podcast have to tell their listeners they “got wrong”?

    • Who wrote it? Directed it? Sang it? Hated it? Posted about it?

  3. Feel comfortable with guessing

So you don’t know the exact answer but you’re educated, right?? You probably have a good idea based on the question to help you narrow down the choices. You have a better chance of winning if you actually play.

  4. Listen to what other players are saying

I cannot count the number of times someone gave away a future answer because they were chatting about the question that was just asked. Whoops! Now they are at a disadvantage. Thanks for easy points, Ben!

  5. Focus on having fun

This sounds cliche and it is for a reason. The less you let self-criticism or irritation take over, the more you’ll be able to reach into the depths of your brain for another (hopefully correct) answer.
